Audrey Hepburn during the filming of Green Mansions
“The forbidden forests beyond the Amazon.”
Green Mansions is a romantic adventure film directed by Mel Ferrer in 1959. It is based upon on the novel of William Henry Hudson’s "Green Mansions." However, the film adaptation deviated far from the original fiction.
Elegant beauty Audrey Hepburn -who at the time was married to the film director- head the cast and depicted the character of Rima, an ethereal mysterious girl of the forest, known as the Bird Girl and an orphan living a life of nature who falls in love with a Venezuelan traveler, Abel, portrayed by classic actor Anthony Perkins.
Heitor Villa-Lobos is described as “the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music,” was first commissioned to comprise the musical score of the film. But his music composition was enthused by W. H. Hudson’s 1904 novel Green Mansions: A Romance of the Tropical Forest rather than the film adaptation.
